1. Welcome and acceptance
CSS-Tricks (css-tricks.com and its related newsletters, feeds, and stores, together the “Site”) is owned and operated by Be Thou Awesome LLC, a Colorado limited liability company (“CSS-Tricks,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). These Terms of Use (“Terms”) are a contract between you and us.
By reading, buying from, subscribing to, or otherwise using the Site, you agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Site.
Some parts of the Site have extra terms, such as the CSS-Tricks License for code, our AI Statement, our Guest Writing guidelines, and any terms shown at checkout. If those conflict with these Terms, the more specific terms control for that feature.
If you use the Site on behalf of a company or team, you agree to these Terms for that organization and confirm you have authority to do so.
2. Eligibility and accounts
Anyone may read the Site’s free content. To buy something, start a membership, or create an account, you must be at least 18, or the age of majority where you live, and able to form a binding contract. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
When you create an account, give us accurate information and keep it current. You’re responsible for your login credentials and for activity under your account. Tell us right away at [email protected] if you suspect unauthorized access.
Accounts are for one person. Don’t share logins or resell access.
You can’t use a username that impersonates someone, infringes a trademark, or is offensive.
3. Our content and how you can use it
We own or license the articles, guides, Almanac entries, images, design, and the CSS-Tricks name and logos. They’re protected by copyright and trademark law.
Code. Code examples published on the Site are covered by the CSS-Tricks License. In short, you can use them in your own projects, personal or commercial, without asking. That license controls over anything in this section.
Articles and other writing. You may read, share links to, and quote reasonable excerpts with attribution and a link back. You may not republish whole articles, scrape the Site to build a competing archive, or present our work as your own.
AI and automated access. Without our written permission, you may not use the Site’s content, including articles, guides, Almanac entries, images, code examples, and paid material, to:
- train, fine-tune, or evaluate machine learning or AI models;
- build datasets, embeddings, or retrieval indexes for a product or service; or
- generate content that substitutes for or repackages our work.
This applies no matter how the content was obtained, including through scraping, crawlers, feeds, or third-party archives. Automated tools must honor our robots.txt file and any rate limits, and may not get around access controls or paywalls. Ordinary search-engine indexing, and an individual using an AI tool to help them read or work with a page they’re viewing, are allowed. If you’d like to license CSS-Tricks content for AI or data use, contact [email protected]. See our AI Statement for more about how we approach AI.
Paid content. Purchases and memberships give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the paid material for your own learning or work. You may not redistribute, resell, or publicly share paid downloads, videos, or member-only posts unless the product page says otherwise.
Brand. Don’t use the CSS-Tricks name, logos, or star mark in a way that suggests we endorse you or your product without written permission.
Feedback. If you send us ideas or suggestions, we may use them freely without owing you anything.
4. Store purchases
The CSS-Tricks store may sell digital products (such as ebooks, courses, templates, and downloads) and physical goods (such as stickers, shirts, and prints).
Orders. Placing an order is an offer to buy. An order is accepted when we confirm it by email or deliver the product. We may refuse or cancel an order, for example for a pricing error, suspected fraud, or stock running out; if we cancel after charging you, we’ll refund you in full.
Prices and taxes. Prices are in U.S. dollars unless shown otherwise. They don’t include sales tax, VAT, or shipping, which are added at checkout where they apply. We may change prices at any time, but not for an order we’ve already accepted.
Payment. Payments are handled by Stripe and PayPal. We don’t store your full card number. You agree to use a payment method you’re authorized to use. We aren’t responsible for fees your bank charges, such as foreign-transaction or overdraft fees.
Digital delivery. Digital products are delivered by download link or account access right after payment. Keep your own copy.
Physical goods. Merchandise is made to order and shipped by our print-on-demand partner, Printify, and its print providers. Production usually takes 2–7 business days before shipping, and items in one order may arrive in separate packages. Shipping times are estimates. Risk of loss passes to you when the carrier delivers. Your name, shipping address, and order details are shared with Printify to fulfill your order. Check your shipping address; we can’t reship orders sent to a wrong address you entered.
Discounts. Promo codes, sale prices, student pricing, and regional (purchasing-power) pricing are subject to the conditions shown with them. They can’t be combined unless stated, have no cash value, and may expire. Regional pricing is for people who live in that region.
Refunds.
- Digital products: refund within 30 days of purchase if it isn’t right for you. One refund per product per person. We may decline refunds where a product has been substantially downloaded or consumed in a pattern suggesting abuse.
- Physical goods: because each item is printed to order, we can’t accept returns or exchanges for change of mind or wrong size, so please check the size chart before ordering. If an item arrives damaged, misprinted, or not what you ordered, email [email protected] within 14 days of delivery with a photo, and we’ll send a replacement or a refund.
- Nothing here limits refund or withdrawal rights you have under consumer law where you live.
5. Memberships and subscriptions
We offer paid memberships that support the Site.
Automatic renewal. Memberships renew automatically at the end of each month or annual term and charge the payment method on file at the then-current price, until you cancel. Before you subscribe, checkout shows the price, billing frequency, and how to cancel. We’ll email a reminder 7 days before renewal.
Free trials. If a trial is offered, you’ll be charged when it ends unless you cancel before then. We’ll show the trial end date at signup.
Price changes. We’ll give at least 30 days’ notice by email before a price change applies to your membership, so you can cancel first.
Cancelling. Cancel anytime from your account page, or by emailing [email protected]. Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep access until the end of the paid term.
Refunds. Membership fees are non-refundable. If you cancel your membership, it will remain active until the end of the current term.
Failed payments. If a renewal charge fails, we’ll retry and notify you. Access may pause until the payment is updated.
Changes to benefits. Member benefits may change over time. If we materially reduce them, we’ll tell you and you can cancel your membership.
6. Your contributions and acceptable use
Comments, reviews, and testimonials. You keep ownership of what you post. You give us a worldwide, royalty-free license to host, display, edit for length or formatting, and distribute it on the Site and in our promotion of the Site. You’re responsible for what you post and confirm you have the right to post it.
Guest articles. Paid or unpaid guest writing is governed by a separate contributor agreement and our Guest Writing guidelines. If there’s a conflict, the contributor agreement controls.
Don’t use the Site to:
- post anything unlawful, harassing, hateful, threatening, or that targets people for who they are;
- infringe someone else’s copyright, trademark, or privacy;
- spam, including link-dropping and undisclosed promotion;
- upload malware or try to break, overload, or get around access controls on the Site, including paywalls;
- scrape or bulk-download the Site in ways that burden our servers, or for any AI or data use restricted in Section 3;
- impersonate anyone or misrepresent an affiliation.
We may moderate, edit, or remove contributions and suspend accounts that break these rules. We aren’t obligated to monitor contributions and aren’t responsible for what other users post.
7. Newsletter, email, and privacy
If you subscribe to our newsletter, we’ll send you editorial roundups and occasional announcements, which may include sponsor messages. Every email has an unsubscribe link; unsubscribing from marketing email doesn’t stop receipts or account notices for purchases and memberships.
How we collect and use personal information, including payment, account, and analytics data, is explained in our Privacy Policy. Payment details are handled by our payment processor under its own privacy terms.
8. Sponsors, ads, and outside links
CSS-Tricks is supported by readers, members, and sponsors. Sponsored posts, newsletter placements, and ads are labeled as such. Sponsors don’t control our editorial coverage.
Some links are affiliate links, meaning we may earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. We mark them with “ad” or “sponsor” in a disclosure at the top of the post.
The Site links to other websites, demos, and tools we don’t control, including CodePen embeds. We aren’t responsible for their content, products, or privacy practices. Purchases from sponsors or other third parties are between you and them.
9. Copyright complaints (DMCA)
If you believe something on the Site infringes your copyright, send a notice to our designated agent:
- Agent: Geoffrey Graham, Be Thou Awesome LLC
- Email: [email protected]
Your notice must include: your physical or electronic signature; identification of the copyrighted work; the URL of the material you say infringes; your contact information; a statement that you believe in good faith the use isn’t authorized; and a statement, under penalty of perjury, that your notice is accurate and you’re authorized to act for the owner.
If your contribution was removed and you believe that was a mistake, you may send a counter-notice with the information required by 17 U.S.C. § 512(g). We’ll terminate accounts of repeat infringers where appropriate.
10. Disclaimers, limits on liability, and indemnity
Use code at your own risk. Tutorials and code are for education. Browser support and best practices change, and older articles may be out of date. Test before you ship.
Disclaimer. THE SITE, ITS CONTENT, AND PRODUCTS ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE.” TO THE EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. We don’t promise the Site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components. This doesn’t affect any product-specific guarantee or refund promise in Sections 4 and 5.
Limitation of liability. TO THE EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, WE AREN’T LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR LOST PROFITS OR DATA. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF (A) WHAT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM OR (B) US$100.
Indemnity. If you misuse the Site, break these Terms, or post content that infringes someone’s rights, and a claim is brought against us because of it, you’ll cover our reasonable costs and losses from that claim.
Some places don’t allow certain disclaimers or limits, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
11. Ending things, disputes, and the fine print
Termination. You can stop using the Site or close your account anytime. We may suspend or close accounts that break these Terms. Sections that by nature should survive (ownership, licenses you granted, disclaimers, liability limits, indemnity, and disputes) survive.
Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Colorado and applicable U.S. federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If you’re a consumer in the EU, UK, or elsewhere with mandatory local protections, you keep those.
Disputes. Please contact us first at [email protected]; most issues get solved that way within 30 days. If not, either party may bring a claim in the state or federal courts in Larimer County, Colorado.
Export and sanctions. You confirm you’re not barred from receiving U.S. goods or services under sanctions laws.
Changes. We may update these Terms. For material changes, we’ll post the new version with a new “Last updated” date and email members and customers at least 30 days before it takes effect. Continued use after that means you accept the changes.
Everything else. These Terms are the whole agreement between you and us about the Site. If part is unenforceable, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a term isn’t a waiver. You can’t transfer your rights under these Terms; we may transfer ours in connection with a sale or reorganization of the Site. The English version controls.
